Clinical Myotherapy
What is Clinical Myotherapy?
Myotherapy is a holistic treatment approach that involves the assessment, treatment and management of musculoskeletal pain and conditions. It uses a wide range of treatment techniques, such as deep tissue massage, joint mobilisation, cupping, dry needling, muscle energy techniques (MET’s), and exercise prescription.
The aim of Myotherapy is to determine the root cause of your pain, and in addition to hand’s on treatment, considers lifestyle modification, functional goals and mental wellbeing.
What to Expect from your First Clinical Myotherapy Appointment
-
When you come in for your first appointment, we’ll sit down and have a chat about the reasons why you’ve made the appointment and your current pain concerns. We’ll discuss your medical history, your current work and exercise routine, medications you may be taking, your sleep and diet habits, and any previous treatment you may have had.
-
Once we have gathered all of the verbal information that is needed, we may perform a movement assessment. This is to see how your body moves and to determine areas of restriction and pain. This helps us get a baseline for comparison at the conclusion of your appointment. We may also palpate (feel) areas of the body to check for tension and pain.
-
During your appointment, we may perform soft and deep tissue massage techniques, trigger point release, joint mobilisations, dry needling, myofascial cupping, and exercise prescription. A combination of techniques is typically used depending on what is suitable and recommended for you.
-
At the end of your treatment, we may reassess movement or palpation to see if there are any changes or improvements. Following this, together we create a plan to reach your treatment goals. This could include returning to exercise, reducing pain, relying less on pain medication, or improving sleep quality. Home care advice, including stretches/exercises, and activity modification and postural advice may be given. We then book in your follow-up appointment.

Common Conditions We Treat
Back Pain
Low, middle, or upper back pain can stop you in your tracks and severely impact your daily life and sleep quality. Let us help you restore your movement and get you back to doing what you love.
Neck and Shoulder Pain
Are you a desk worker that spends long days sitting behind the computer and constantly struggle with neck and shoulder pain? Myotherapy treatment can help to reduce tension and improve your posture.
Headaches and Migraines
Headaches and migraines come in many different shapes and forms, but regular Myotherapy treatment can help to address tension related headaches and symptoms of migraines.
Hip Pain and Sciatica
Hip pain on its own or paired with sciatica (a symptom where you experience pain, tingling and/or numbness referred to the gluteal region or down the leg) can interfere with work and exercise. A combination of treatments can help to address this.
Wrist and Elbow Pain
Trouble opening jars or turning doors? An avid tennis player? Perhaps you’ve had pain lifting and holding your child? Whatever the reason, Myotherapy can help to diagnose and treat the underlying cause of your wrist and elbow pain.
TMJ Dysfunction and Jaw Pain
Commonly associated with a clicking jaw, painful chewing, and reduced range of motion of the jaw, TMJ dysfunction is a common presentation in the clinic. Releasing the jaw and learning relaxation techniques can help to combat pain.
